What does the Centre do?

Bismi-llāhir-raḥmānir-raḥīm and as-salāmu ʿalaykum,

Dear respected visitors,

You may already be familiar with the Islam Care Centre as a mosque and Islamic information centre, but do you also know about the invaluable services it has been providing not only to our local Muslim community, but also to people of the entire Ottawa-Gatineau region?

The Islam Care Centre is Ottawa’s only full-time Muslim social service organization that serves anyone who needs care. Whether it is for the family whose child was placed in foster care, the inmate whose wife and child needed support, the woman who needed help escaping abuse, the convert who was put out on the street, or the man with mental illness who simply needed help with routine daily tasks, the Centre was there to step in and provide these individuals with the care they needed.

In every instance, these individuals had nowhere else to turn. At the Islam Care Centre, we see this every day. The Islam Care Centre, therefore, provides a special type of care and attention that not just any institution, organization or well-meaning individual can provide. We take it upon ourselves—as a responsibility and a duty to the community—to be trained, equipped and ready to fill in the gaps and provide care and assistance to those who have nowhere else to turn.

Our programs include chaplaincy and restorative justice as well as services for families, children, converts, women, inmates, seniors, youth, patients in palliative care, and the homeless. We respect the privacy and honour the dignity of anyone who comes our way for help whether they are clients or simply visitors. The Islam Care Centre is also the only information centre, Islamic resource centre and mosque in downtown Ottawa.

Please read what these people had to say about the care they received from our Centre:

Islamic Information

Our centre in downtown Ottawa, is inviting the general public to understand Islam. We provide a resource centre for government agencies, the media, academic institutions and religious groups. We can sponsor public lectures at universities, high schools or even faith based organizations. By the grace of God we have been effective in counseling and assisting inmates at detention centres and providing them with Islamic resources. We supply public libraries with Islamic books; and offer books and material to non-Muslims. Our easy accessibility, every day of the week, makes us the first stop for anyone seeking information regarding Islam.

Seniors

A rare aspect of manners that we find today in general society is respect for the elderly and those who are senior to us. As society progresses in many different avenues, it is unfortunate that manner’s in people are slowly disintegrating; especially for the youth. This is evident in the media and everyday lives of people. Seniors are not receiving the respect they deserve and elder abuse cases are on a sharp rise. Islam Care Centre wishes to ensure that as Muslims, we are under an obligation from our Lord to treat the elderly with kindness, respect and generosity.

God says in the Qur’an “Your Lord has commanded that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to your parents. If one or both of them reach old age with you, do not say to them a word of disrespect, or scold them, but say a generous word to them. And act humbly to them in mercy, and say, ‘My Lord, have mercy on them, since they cared for me when I was small (17: 23-24).” In this key passage in the Qur’an, we see that it is a commandment from god to be kind to our parents and disrespect towards them is prohibited.

Often we tend to abandon our beloved youth in times which they are most in need with the notion that they must learn to be independent. We want them to be self reliant and be able to manage their difficulties all on their own. This often causes youth to tread a path that is disconnected with the public and binds them into a culture of “every man for himself”.
